SIBU: Sibu Resident’s Office yesterday launched its updated ‘Sibu Division Disaster Directory’ at its office here.

Its Resident Charles Siaw when launching the directory said it contained information on disasters that had taken place in Sibu.

“The directory also has a contact list of officers, evacuation centres in Sibu District, Selangau District and Kanowit District, logistics and locations of helicopter landing pads,” he told a press conference after the launching ceremony.

“It also has information on floodprone areas, schools susceptible to flooding and global positioning system (GPS) coordinates list,” he added.

Meanwhile, Siaw said Sibu Municipal Council and Sibu Rural District Council would put in place flood-water level alert sticks along roads affected by floods.

“The district office has directed community leaders in flood-prone areas to report to the district-level disaster operation rooms in their respective areas should a disaster strikes,” he said.

He said radio stations would also assist the disaster management committee to update listeners on flood situations.

According to him, flood-prone schools also have their own disaster management committees to liaise with the district or divisional-level disaster operation room.

Siaw also touched on training sessions for relevant departments and agencies to improve their proficiency in handling flood situations in collaboration with the disaster management committees.

“We’re also making good use of the social media in our service to the flood victims,” he said, adding that the disaster management committee of the Resident’s Office is well prepared for any eventuality during the floods.

The directory also has a contact list of officers, evacuation centres in Sibu District, Selangau District and Kanowit District, logistics and locations of helicopter landing pads. Charles Siaw, Sibu Resident
