‘Frequent safety checks on jetties a must’

-

SIBU: The relevant authorities should conduct frequent checks on jetties, especially the wooden structures, as their condition may deteriorate due to wear and tear brought about by the weather and exposure to water.

In this regard, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stresses that such a facility must be constantly monitored to ensure its safety.

His remarks were made in response to the Oct 29 incident where parts of Pulau Anak Tikus jetty in Langkawi collapsed, injuring 12 people.

“Looking at this latest incident, it is clear that the aspects of safety and health are not taken seriously; there has been a lack of constant checking and monitoring on the facility.

“It also shows that the safety audit was not carried out regularly.

“All the relevant authorities must be on constant alert and should regularly check on the safety of the facilities under their jurisdiction,” Lee said in a press statement.

He emphasised that the occupational safety and health ( OSH) for tourism industry must be practised for the safety of all.

“Therefore, those involved in the tourism industry should adopt good OSH management and practices to reduce the number of accidents and health problems in the sector,” Lee said.
