Mundaw calls it a day after 41 years in armed forces

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Lt Gen Datuk Stephen Mundaw, the fi rst Dayak appointed commander of the Eastern Field Command, ended his illustriou­s career in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), yesterday.

He handed over duties to his successor Lt Gen Datuk Wira Zamrose Mohd Zain at Muara Tuang Camp here witnessed by Malaysian army chief General Datuk Seri Ahmad Hasbullah Mohd Nawawi.

Mundaw, in his farewell speech during the ceremony said he had no regrets serving in the ATM as he believed that he had done his best.

“I am proud to be a soldier who served this country ( Malaysia). Although I am now retired, it does not mean I will stop serving my country. I will continue to contribute in whatever way I can,” he added.

He also said he would continue to live in Sarawak during retirement, and perhaps spend most of his time in Pakit, a village in Sri Aman where he originated from.

“I intend to be actively involved in activities organised by the army veterans now that I am a veteran myself. I have many fond memories while serving the country as a soldier, but I have to embark on a new journey now,” he said.

Ahmad meanwhile wished Mundaw all the best in his retirement years, describing him as a friend.

“I hope he can adjust to life as a civilian after 41 years in the force. He is not only a dedicated soldier but also served the country well. He has achieved a lot of things during his time in service.”

Mundaw, 60, thanked the government and ATM for putting the trust in him to lead the Eastern Field Command, and urged more young people from villages all over Sarawak to come forward to join the army.

Born on May 31, 1958 in Kuching, Mundaw is also an avid golfer and enjoys water sports, particular­ly jet-skiing.

During his younger days, he was a formidable athlete and a natural born swimmer.

He represente­d Malaysian Armed Forces Under-23 team in hockey and squash.
