MMEA vital for SAR operations in Sarawak waters
BINTULU: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency ( MMEA) Sarawak had carried out a total of 334 search and rescue ( SAR) operations in Sarawak waters since its establishment in 2006.
The total number of victims involved were 239 people with 143 victims rescued alive, 60 dead and 36 missing.
MMEA Bintulu zone director Captain ( M) Shahref Steve Mac Queen Abdullah who disclosed the statistics said MMEA has been entrusted as the lead agency for conducting SAR operations at sea on June 6, 2006 from Marine Department of Malaysia.
In a recent SAR operation, he said a search was mounted for a fisherman who fell into the sea about 35 nautical miles from Tanjung Kidurong.
“After three days of SAR the victim was found alive on a Bayan platform by a local fishing boat who coincidently passed through the area.
“This data shows that Sarawak waters is potentially exposed to SAR incidents.
“Sarawak is rich with oil platforms and there are many merchant vessels passing through Sarawak waters heading to Sabah, the Philippines or Indonesia,” said Shahref when officiating at the closing of Search and Rescue Exercise Level 2 ( Sarex) Bintulu Maritime Zone programme on Thursday.
According to him, the presence of merchant vessels can become a factor for many incidences and possibilities at sea.To improve the skills and understanding in SAR procedures, Sarex was implemented to train and explain the procedures to officers of the relevant agencies and departments.
“This training also foster closer ties and understanding between the parties,” Shahref added.
He hoped all officers involved in the training would be able to understand their task and responsibility while coordinating SAR operations.
“As an officer you must be competent in carrying out your duty. We have a big role and responsibility to ensure the safety of all and to give greater confidence to the public especially the maritime communities,” Shahref said.
