‘Perkis Miri plans to run more activities next year’

MIRI: The Miri chapter of Sarawak Islamic Welfare Associatio­n ( Perkis) will continue to run activities slated for the benefit of the local Muslims, particular­ly in areas of welfare, religious affairs and education.

Perkis Miri new chairman Ali Abdul Rahman also said the chapter would enhance its recruitmen­t drive to further expand its membership.

“We will continue to run more activities for the Muslims here, and also to support government agencies that handle Islamic affairs. More activities will be conducted next year and we call upon more Muslims to join Perkis,” he told The Borneo Post Friday.

On it welfare programmes, Ali said the focus would be helping the less- fortunate Muslims, conducting religious talks at Muslim neighbourh­oods and holding educationa­l programmes for Muslim orphans.

He said to achieve this, his new committee would always work together and conduct regular meetings to identify the problems faced by less-fortunate Muslims and means to make them more independen­t.

“It is our hope that they would become self-reliant after receiving assistance from the government or NGOS.

Perkis Miri annual general meeting was held at Pelita Commercial Centre here recently, with Ali elected as chairman for the 2020 term and Brahim Yunus as his deputy.

Mohdzar Aman and Abang Idin Abang Dabet were appointed respective secretary and assistant secretary, while Dr Hamden Gani was elected treasurer.

The committee members are Idris Matassan, Mostapha Mahli, Dris Hassan, Osman Ani, Mortadza Busrah, Mohamad Masri, Norziah Nadzrah Abdullah, Nor Aman, Alina Ali, Leli Tayok and Horry Bujang.
