JULAU: Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat has assured villagers of Kampung Cina Selaut – a small Chinese village located just opposite this town across the Kanowit River – that their welfare would accorded similar attention as that extended to other local communities.

He said this after declaring the upgrading works on the village’s 2km concrete access road last Thursday.

The RM200,000 project was one of those approved under his Rural Transformation Project (RTP) grant for this year.

Additionally, the assemblyman said the villagers had also received a share from his minor rural project (MRP) allocation. In this regard, he assured them that he would continue to deliver development projects to improve the living standard of the local folk as long as he remained the elected representative of the area.

In response to the villagers’ request for a bailey bridge to be built over Kanowit River which would link the village with the town, Rolland said he would look into the matter and hoped that it could be realised using his future RTP fund.

For the time being, he advised Kampung Cina Selaut security and development committee (JKKK) to work out a project proposal, including identifying the most appropriate site for the bridge.

Earlier Penghulu Joseph Wong, who spoke on behalf of the villagers, said that the JKKK was still negotiating with a land owner for a possible agreement to use parts of his land for the project’s site.

Wong said the proposed bridge, which should be passable to vehicles, would make a lot of difference as it would enable the villagers to conveniently drive in and out of the village.

Currently, such mobility is restricted – the villagers are using a suspension bridge, which is only passable to pedestrians and motorcycles cross over to town.

Kampung Cina Selaut headman Kapitan Hung Tien Yong was also present at the event.
