PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says the Cabinet has yet to discuss the move to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination ( ICERD).

Nevertheless, she said the issue would definitely be discussed by the Cabinet.

“The matter has not been discussed in detail at the Cabinet level, but we will surely discuss it,” she told reporters when asked to comment on public concern over the ICERD ratification, which they claimed would harm the special position of the Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, was met after officiating the closing ceremony of the Conference on Sustainable Wellbeing of Children, Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens 2018 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre ( PICC) here yesterday.

On Sunday, approximately 1,500 people gathered around Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur in protest against ICERD ratification by the government.

On Oct 25, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy was reported as saying that the government was committed to ratify six treaties including ICERD in the first quarter of next year.

However, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Oct 31 said Malaysia would only ratify ICERD after negotiations with all the races.

Meanwhile, Dr Wan Azizah, who is also PKR president, said the party hoped that investigation would be done into the allegation that the candidate for PKR deputy president’s post, Mohd Rafizi Ramli, was assaulted during the polling in Keningau, Sabah last Saturday.

“We want investigation to be done,” she said.
