MARUDI: Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil says rural folk ought to be pleased with the rural development- biased Budget tabled by the Sarawak government in the current State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) sitting.

According to him, the record budget places heavy emphasis on rural development in terms of infrastructure as well as electricity and water supply.

“The government under GPS ( Gabungan Parti Sarawak) has promised the Budget this time is to be the biggest, focusing on rural areas. We should be thankful because the state government’s focus is on the rakyat ( people) in rural areas, with not less than 70 per cent allocated to rural infrastructure, electricity supply and water supply,” he said.

Penguang said this when officiating at an appreciation dinner organised by the Malaysian Government Servants Welfare

He also said that works to construct the Baram River Bridge will commence next year, while the tender for the construction of Marudi Waterfront will be issued soon.

The RM23-million waterfront project, which was listed as ‘KeepIn-View’ by Putrajaya, has been taken up by the Sarawak government using its own funds.

During the dinner, Penguang praised Maksak Marudi for organising various sports competitions for its members such as futsal and volleyball, saying next year’s plan involves a badminton competition.

He also extended his thanks to two outgoing Maksak Marudi members, namely Baram police chief DSP Gabriel Risut and Marudi District Council ( MDC) secretary Petrick Linggi Taboh, for their active participation in the council.

Gabriel will be transferring to the Sarawak police contingent headquarters in Kuching in January next year, while Petrick who has been with MDC since 2007, has moved to Limbang District Council effective Nov 1.

Among those present were Marudi District Officer Mackos Sibong and MDC chairman Edward Mendai.
