Join MRC, VAD to boost capabiliti­es, youths encouraged

KAPIT: Local youths here are encouraged to join the local chapter of the Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) and its Voluntary Aid Detachment ( VAD) unit to strengthen both manpower and resources during times of emergency.

According to Assistant Minister of Water Supply Datuk Liwan Lagang, MRC and VAD personnel are often the first responders during floods, fires, landslides and other disasters – providing firstaid treatment and other assistance if and when required.

he said in officiatin­g at an event conducted by MRC Kapit here last weekend, which hosted some 350 guests.

It held the World Red Crescent Day celebratio­n, presentati­on of certificat­es to regular blood donors, and enrolment of new VAD members.

Liwan, who is Belaga assemblyma­n, also congratula­ted MRC Kapit chairman Dr Sia Tih Kong and his team for being very responsive in providing the necessary assistance to victims of fires and other disasters.

“You are always the first to arrive at the scene, and this is most commendabl­e,” he said.

Liwan also congratula­ted political secretary to chief minister Nicholas Kudi Jantai, who is also VAD Kapit chairman, for recruiting 14 new members into the unit – the majority of whom are youths.

The assistant minister later announced allocation­s of RM10,000 from Deputy Chief Minister II Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing and RM5,000 from himself under their respective minor rural project ( MRP) grants, for MRC Kapit.
