Lions clubs hold free health screening for residents in Sibu Jaya township

-

SIBU: Seven local Lions clubs jointly held a health screening in Sibu Jaya recently, meant to provide free health checks to local residents.

The seven Lions clubs are those representing the Sibu Mandarin, Sibu Pahlawan, Sibu Jaya, Bawang Assan, Sibu Nangka, Sibu Queensway and Sibu Lanang chapters.

The event, running from 8am to 2pm, received encouraging response from the locals, especially those residing in Sibu Jaya and the nearby areas.

According to organising chairman Yong Nai Kiong from Lions Club of Sibu Mandarin, the health screening programme included checks on blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure, breast- screening, dental services, pap smear, BodyMass Index ( BMI) screening, eye- screening and consultation sessions with doctors.

Sibu Rural District Council deputy chairman Robert Lau, when met at the event, commented that it is essential for the young and old alike to maintain good health and healthy lifestyle, stressing ‘health is wealth’.

“That is why I would like to propose to the caring Lions who organise today’s event, to hold more health talks for the people of Sibu Jaya in line with the initiative to instil greater level of awareness of staying fit and healthy.

“Thus, it would be wonderful if you all ( Lions clubs) could go to schools and visit the communities in Sibu Jaya, and talk to them about practising healthy lifestyle. Apart from that, we should always be more concerned about our eating habits and do exercise frequently,” he pointed out.

Lau said most people, especially the youths, might not fully realise how important it is to have good health.

“When we are healthy, most of us never bother about taking good care of our own health.

“However as we get older, we realise how important it is to take good care of our health, because when we fall sick, we cannot buy good health.”
