KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated a total of RM2.8 billion to address water problems across the state.
Assistant Minister of Water Supply Datuk Liwan Lagang said the announced projects were located throughout Sarawak, especially in rural areas with critical water problems.
“So far, four projects have been completed, 16 projects are under construction and the rest are in various stages of implementation including tenders,” he said in the State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) yesterday in response to a question from Datuk Idris Buang ( PBB-Muara Tuang).
Asked on projects that have been implemented, Liwan said the completed projects were a temporary drainage system in Pusa, upgrading of the refining system at Nanga Ngungun and Kanowit Water Treatment Plant, as well as leaking tanks at Nanga Tada Water Treatment Plant and Nanga Sekuau Water Treatment Plant.
“The total cost of these projects is RM720,000,” he said.
To a supplementary question, he said the cause of such water problems, including in Muara Tuang, was due to the old and leaking pipe system which led to high non- revenue water, lack of raw water intake feed, and inadequate treatment facility.
