Public invited to seminar on ‘Sarawak Rights under MA63’ on Dec 7

KUCHING: Sarawak Patriot Associatio­n ( SPA) will conduct a seminar on ‘Sarawak Rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 ( MA63)’ at Sarawak Islamic Informatio­n Centre in Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here from 7pm to 10pm on Dec 7.

Its secretary David Hii Chin Loung said two distinguis­hed speakers, Dato Sri JC Fong and Datuk David Teng Lung Chi, have been invited to share with members of the public on the subject.

Fong, who is Sarawak Legal Counsel will speak on ‘ equal status and partnershi­p for Sabah and Sarawak within the Federation of Malaysia’.

Fong is also former State Attorney General, and currently part of the MA63 legal team. He has vast experience in MA63. He initiated MA63 research in 2007 and was one of those who made the trip to London to do more research into MA63.

Teng, president of Sarawak Arts, and Cultural Research Institute, will speak on ‘ MA63 special positions and safeguards of Sarawak’.

Teng, a lawyer by training, is a former assistant minister and was a seven-term Repok assemblyma­n before his retirement from active politics.

“From our recent survey, 80 per cent of those interviewe­d expressed their keen interest to know Sarawakian­s rights,” Hii said.

“We encourage every Sarawakian to participat­e in the seminar to know about their rights under MA63, the importance of equal partnershi­p, how it will affect us Sarawakian­s, and the importance of the special positions and safeguards for Sarawak under MA63. It is our duty as Sarawakian­s to rally together and to pursue for the return of our eroded rights under MA63.”

The seminar will be conducted in English. There will be a 45minute question- and- answer session to allow the participan­ts to seek for clarificat­ion from the two speakers.
