Dr Sim: Losses aside, govt to continue giving people the best

-

KUCHING: The Sarawak government will continue to render the best service to the people through the local authorities ( LAs) despite having to bear heavier financial losses.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said this is in line with the government’s principle of prioritising the best interests of the people.

“For instance, the LAs only collect about RM20 million from the people for garbage collection services via assessment rates, but spend as much as RM58 million to ensure the cleanliness of the surrounding is maintained for the people’s comfort.

“Despite incurring losses, the government and LAs will continue to render the best service to the people,” he said during a Deepavali celebration at Kuching

The event was held as part of the council’s ‘ Together with the Community 2018’ programme.

During the celebration, Dr Sim also asked the people of Sarawak to defend the existing harmony and peace.

“It does not matter whether we are the majority race or minority race, all of us are Sarawakians and we need to maintain the harmony that exists in our society.”

Meanwhile, Kuching South mayor Dato James Chan said the Deepavali celebration was an annual affair to enable MBKS staffers, especially those from the Indian community, to celebrate the festival together with the public.

“By organising such event, it will provide a platform for other ethnic groups to understand the Indian culture and religion,” he said.
