KUCHING: An anti-rabies vaccination programme was held at Taman Sahabat, Jalan Song here from 9am to 2pm yesterday.

According to veterinary officer Dr Jackie Peter, 11 personnel from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) vaccinated 235 dogs.

“We hope the public is aware that it is important to vaccinate their pets, especially dogs if they want to keep them,” he told reporters yesterday.

The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, said it would remain committed in the fight against rabies.

Speaking to reporters during the launching of the Rabies Awareness Signage at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex last Wednesday, the ministry’s permanent secretary Bakrie Zaini said Sarawak had taken numerous measures in the fight against rabies and would intensify efforts to increase public awareness.

“We are satisfied with the many efforts taken by the mass media in spreading information about rabies.

“The awareness on rabies has increased and we will continue to intensify such efforts,” he said.

He also said that close cooperation between the Department of Veterinary Services, Health Ministry and local authorities had greatly assisted in fighting the disease.

“Local authorities, meanwhile, have deployed 160 officers statewide to monitor the stray dog situation on our streets, while trying to bring down the number of strays,” he said.
