MPKS to build 2 new markets next year

-

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two new markets will be built by Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) to provide better trading venues for the hawkers.

Its chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the council has the funds to build the two markets.

One will be built near the Samarahan Bridge and the other at Tambirat in Asajaya. They will be built parallel to the roads.

“They will be built next year, now that the land issue has been sorted out. Both are meant for the existing roadside traders,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was responding to concerns raised by hawkers over the council’s all-out enforcement against those trading at fivefoot ways, roadsides, pedestrian walkways and parking lots in their jurisdiction effective Jan 1, next year.

Minos said the council does care about the traders.

“MPKS does think of the traders’ livelihood. Only that the current roadside traders are creating traffic problem of sorts and possibly causing accidents especially when motorists parked by the roadsides. That we do not desire.

“Once the two roadside stalls and the Aiman wet market are done and completed by next year, MPKS will not want to see or tolerate anymore roadside stalls in Kota Samarahan. Public safety, cleanliness and beauty of the town cannot be compromised,” he said.
