SRDC to act tough against litterbugs
SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) will mete out tough action against litterbugs, including slapping them with a RM500 compound fine.
Its chairman, Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, pointed out that littering is a compoundable offence stipulated in the Cleanliness By Law.
“As for SRDC, we will use any provision under Cleanliness By Law including imposing fines against litterbugs and anybody who litter especially at public places.
“The minimum compound is RM100 but litterbugs can be compounded up to RM500,” he told The Borneo Post Friday.
Sempurai was asked if SRDC has any plan to impose fines on litterbugs under its jurisdiction.
“Although the situation is still under control, we need to educate the people by using warning and fines,” he said.
Elsewhere, in areas under Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), the compound amount had been increased to RM500 from RM20 since July 1, 2017.
SMC deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain revealed that 760 compound notices were issued to litterbugs during the first 10 months of this year.
According to Rogayah, 32 per cent or 244 compound fines had been settled.
Meanwhile, during a recent full council meeting, SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said they were mulling taking action provided for under the Offenders Compulsory Attendance Act 1954 on litterbugs here who defaulted on their compound payment, to carry out community service.
According to Tiong, the types of community service that could be imposed were to sweep litter at the council’s buildings or parks, or to clean or wash the council’s public toilets, among others.
