Long Bedian to host Highland Folk Music and Dance Festival
MIRI: The 4th Highland Folk Music and Dance Festival will be held in Long Bedian on Dec 14-15.
According to its organising committee spokesperson Jong Eng Jok, the objectives of the festival are to revive interest in traditional musical instruments, intensify tourism activities, promote the unique ethnic music and also attract the younger generation to learn, appreciate and play traditional musical instruments.
He said each of the nine Orang Ulu ethnicities have been invited to perform besides performances by representatives from every longhouse around Long Bedian.
“The programme will commence on the evening of Dec 14 with performances from the host (Long Bedian) and adjacent longhouse. On Dec 15, from morning till evening there will be talks, exhibitions, sales and games while the highlight will be the evening performances from each ethnic group,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Telang Usan district officer Baru Tai as the organising chairperson recently chaired a meeting at Miri Resident Office which was also attended by several representatives of government agencies in Long Lama, representative of SabahSarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP), representatives of several Orang Ulu ethnics under Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (Forum), administrative officer of Long Bedian Sub District office Edwin Jelenggai, representative of Long Bedian host such as community leader Lah Anyie and Long Bedian Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) secretary Erick Anderias.
The festival secretariat will be based in Long Bedian SubDistrict Office.
