JKKKs put in high alert against rabies — Dennis

-

MIRI: The village security and development committees (JKKKs) in the rural areas of Baram have been put on high alert to prevent the spread of rabies.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said they have been advised to activate their health and safety bureau and report any cases of suspected rabies infected dogs to the authorities immediately.

“The rural people have been cautioned against bringing dogs from townsback totheirlonghouses and villages, especially dogs from rabies infected areas.

The health and safety bureau must catch and cage any suspected rabies infected dog which should be done with proper care so as not to be bitten,” Dennis told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

Dennis also warned the people in the rural areas to make sure they lock their pet dogs and not to leave children unattended to prevent them from being attacked by dogs.

Schools and their security staff must also prevent dogs from roaming around the school compound, he stressed.

“My fear of this disease being spread to the rural areas came true with Daleh Long Pelutan at Long Miri becoming the latest rabies spot.

“Now, I have serious fear that many dogs at areas or longhouses are already infected by the disease.

“As Daleh Long Pelutan is located above several longhouses in Baram, it could not be possible for the disease to travel without affecting other dogs in between Miri City and Daleh Long Pelutan,” said Dennis.

Dennis also urged rural clinics in Baram to assist in organising events to disseminate proper advice on rabies control among rural folks.

“My worry is our rural folks may not see the danger of rabies as dogs have been playing very important roles in their lives,” he added.
