KUCHING: The new KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital ( KcSH) is expected to be open during the second quarter of next year as it will be equipped with better medical equipment and facilities including Oncology treatment.

KcSH director Roslan Ahmad said there is a great demand for Oncology treatment and as a responsible hospital that provides the best health services to the community, the new hospital – which costs RM150 million – will be providing such treatment for patients suffering from cancer.

“The new hospital will be equipped with more comfortable facilities, having more than 150 beds and 450 parking spaces and the new hospital will open in the second quarter of 2019,” he said during the press conference at the KPJ Colour Run 2018 for Cancer Awareness held at Saradise, BDC, Jalan Stutong here yesterday.

The event was officiated by Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

At the same time, Roslan added that all operations of KcSH will be moved to the new building once it is completed.

On the KPJ Colour Run 2018, he said it was organised to promote a healthy lifestyle among the community and a part of KcSH's corporate social responsibility.

“We aim to make this run an annual event due to the excellent response we received, with more than 3,200 runners participating compared with 2,000 runners the previous year,” he said.

He said proceeds from the run will be distributed to Sarawak Cancer Support Group and Sarawak Pink Ribbon, with both organisations receiving RM5,000 each.

Meanwhile, medical director Dr David Ling Sheng Tee said strategies to tackle cancer include practising a healthy lifestyle.

“Besides that, early cancer detection is important and as a result we are providing information to the community on the early signs of cancer.

“Early detection of cancer is important so that treatment can be given at an early stage to reduce the risk of death due to the disease.”

On the other hand, Dr Sim welcomed the KPJ Colour Run 2018 as it promotes a healthy lifestyle among the citizens of Kuching.

“I see that the Kuching community places high importance on health and I thank the organiser and the citizens for showing their interest in taking good care of their health as we want not only a developed city but also a healthy society.”

He added that the state government will continue to provide more venues for recreational and sports activities to ensure that the citizens of the state are healthy.
