Enviro-Hunt raises conservati­on awareness

MIRI: Some 40 participan­ts converged on Piasau Nature Reserve ( PNR) here yesterday to raise awareness of environmen­tal conservati­on through the inaugural EnviroHunt programme.

The participan­ts, who were energetic and jovial the moment they arrived at the event ground, were from various agencies including Petronas Carigali Sarawak Oil ( SK- Oil), Department of Environmen­t ( DoE), Miri City Council ( MCC), Natural Resources and Environmen­t Board ( NREB), Marine Department, Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba), Royal Malaysia Police, Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the Education Department.

Jointly organised by SK- Oil and DoE Miri, the environmen­tal awareness programme was held in conjunctio­n with Petronas’ Health, Safety and Environmen­t ( HSE) month.

“Through this programme, we hope to raise public awareness on environmen­tal conservati­on, and cultivate a sense of ownership for the environmen­t while enhancing collaborat­ion with the local authoritie­s in Miri to achieve common goals.

“Apart from that, this is also part of initiative­s to inculcate a healthy lifestyle and support Petronas ‘ MESTIfit4h­ealth’ programme. In the hustle and bustle of daily living, do not forget that health is a priority in ensuring productivi­ty at work

Anuar said SK- Oil will continue to contribute towards environmen­tal sustainabi­lity in Miri under its corporate social responsibi­lity programme and hoped for more of such collaborat­ion and smart partnershi­p in the near future.

During the event, participan­ts were sent to PNR to find clues and hints along the nature trails to solve puzzles related to the historical value and biodiversi­ty of PNR, as well as general environmen­t laws and regulation­s.

Anuar disclosed that apart from Enviro- Hunt, Petronas also organised several other environmen­tal awareness programmes here this year, including the deployment of artificial reef balls at MiriSibuti Coral Reefs National Park which was organised with

collaborat­ion from Sarawak Forestry Corporatio­n.

Other programmes included the 3R ( Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) Innovation Challenge in collaborat­ion with NREB, sponsoring of environmen­tal education activities carried out by Pencinta Alam Sekitar ( PALS) Club of SK Pulau Melayu and SMK St Columba since 2016, beach cleaning as well as gotongroyo­ng (work parties).

The event saw SK- Oil Young Profession­al Club Team emerge champion, followed by Bomba and SK- Oil Personal Health Management in second and third place, respective­ly.

The Bomba team was also named ‘ Most Creative Group’.

Among those present were Department of Environmen­t Sarawak assistant director ( Developmen­t) Mohd Zaihan Lek, DoE Miri officer Julaiha Jumal, Environmen­tal Management for Health, Safety and Environmen­t Department of Petronas Carigali Sarawak Oil manager Miza Ahmad Zaidi, and Bomba Miri chief Law Poh Kiong.
