Woodlands showcases dedication to active learning
SIBU: It was a true festival of colour, dance and music as Woodlands International School (WIS) held its annual ‘Celebration of Learning’ for its primary school division on Friday.
Apart from handing out traditional awards such as ‘ Best Student’ and ‘ Most Improved’, the ceremony also incorporated four short Greek dramas, namely Medusa, Pandora’s Box, Hades and Persephone, and Theseus and the Minotaur, that were interspersed with songs and dances.
“It’s been a wonderful opportunity for all our students to showcase their talents through interactive learning. Our primary students show confidence in their abilities and are a credit to the teaching and learning at our unique school,” said WIS principal Aubrey Groves.
The school differentiates itself by using active learning to engage students in the learning process.
Students are actively involved, rather than just passively listen, and are therefore able to retain information with greater ease and success.
The ceremony’s theme – Greek Myths and Legends – is covered as part of the Cambridge International programme of studies by the students.
All 100 of the participating students, aged 5 to 12, were actively involved as actors, dancers or singers.
Parents also lent a helping hand providing costumes and makeup.
The programme encapsulated Woodlands International School’s philosophy which includes active learning, collaboration and teamwork, ably demonstrated by the 18- member primary teaching team who coordinated this enormous undertaking.
Almost all parents attended the celebrations, ensuring there was a strong community feel to the proceedings.
Also in attendance were WIS chief operating officer Charles Tiong and primary division head Suhanti Kuppusamy.
The guests of honour present included Board of Governors chairperson Judy Wong and board member Kapitan Connie Loh.
