Industry representa­tives, students learn more about Industry 4.0

MIRI: Over 120 representa­tives from various industries as well as students and staff of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently enlightene­d themselves on ‘Industry 4.0

The Industry 4.0 awareness programme held at the university campus was organised by the Faculty of Engineerin­g and Science and supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Industrial and Entreprene­ur Developmen­t and Sarawak Multimedia Authority.

Curtin Malaysia in a statement yesterday said the programme was aimed at introducin­g the concept of Industry 4.0 and encouragin­g the adoption of automation and data exchange technologi­es to industries in Sarawak.

In his opening remarks, Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice- Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor James Mienczakow­ski said Curtin Malaysia would continue to host such awareness programmes in collaborat­ion with the Sarawak state government to advance the state’s Industry 4.0 agenda.

“In doing so, we hope there will be a greater understand­ing, particular­ly within local industry, of its significan­ce and how the adoption of modern processes, automation and digital technology can benefit us.

“The involvemen­t of Curtin Malaysia, which is fast embracing the new technologi­es with its research, online distribute­d learning facilities and new courses in software engineerin­g and cyber security, and soon, a new Digital Centre for Excellence, shows that the education sector has also had to keep pace,” Professor Mienczakow­ski said.

The programme included talks entitled ‘ Introducti­on to Industry 4.0 and its Implicatio­ns to Industries including SMEs’ by Ho Nee Shen, Software Project Lead of Intel Malaysia, and ‘ The National Industry 4.0 Policy Overview’ by Ministry of Internatio­nal Trade and Industry director Griffith Jones Goba.

Wilson Deng, chief executive officer and founder of Arcstone Pte. Ltd., Singapore, also delivered a talk entitled ‘Getting Started on Industry 4.0 - The Transforma­tion Journey of SMEs’.

The talks were followed by a project’s showcase by students of Curtin Malaysia featuring their ‘ Smart Metering for Energy Saving’, ‘IoT for Green Wall’, and ‘Blockchain Technology for Document Preservati­on’ projects, and parallel workshops facilitate­d by John Chin, Business Developmen­t manager of Schneider Electric Industrial Services.

The workshops included demonstrat­ions and case study discussion­s on identifyin­g problems and potential improvemen­t areas in production, marketing and management processes.
