26 arrested, RM2,843 seized in crackdown against illegal gambling
KUCHING: The ongoing crackdown against illegal gambling activities in Sarawak saw a total of 21 raids carried out by police across the state.
Sarawak CID chief SAC Denis Leong said of the 21 raids, 12 were against illegal lottery while the rest involved online gambling.
“The raids were conducted in Kuching ( 2), Padawan ( 5), Sibu (3), Miri (5), Kota Samarahan (1), Maradong (1), Serian (2), Sarikei (1) and Sri Aman (1).
“In total, 26 individuals were arrested and cash amounting to RM2,843 was seized,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He also disclosed that with assistance from Sarawak Energy Berhad, police have since August disconnected electricity supply to 256 premises that were found to be engaged in illegal lottery activities.
Meanwhile, Leong said police held a high-powered discussion with lottery operator Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd at the state police headquarters here on Nov 23.
The meeting was to discuss methods of monitoring illegal lottery activities and channelling ‘live’ information on such activities to the police, and was attended by Berjaya Sports Toto Berhad CEO Nerine Tan, among others.
Leong, meanwhile, also urged the public to continue channelling information on illegal gambling activities to Sarawak CID via its hotline on 082-274213.
