MIRI: The Residents Committee ( RC) established by Miri City Council ( MCC) not only fosters the spirit of neighbourliness and unity, it has also proven to be effective in community policing.

Mayor Adam Yii was happy to see that the RC was now growing bigger and its role had been expanded to support crime prevention efforts at residential areas through patrol teams.

Speaking at the Appreciation Dinner ‘ Smart Community Award 2017’ for RC Pujut Zone at MCC’s Green Community Hub compound at Taman Yakin on Sunday, the mayor said the idea of the RC was actually mooted by former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan in 2009.

“RC also acts as ‘eyes and ears’ in helping MCC to monitor the performances of its contractors while carrying out the council’s services at the respective residential areas.”

He said the RC had been divided into 15 zones – Taman Tunku and Lambir; Jalan Bakam, Brighton and Luak; Lopeng and Riam; Canada Hill; Krokop; Piasau and RPR Batu 6; Pulau Melayu; Pujut; Perdana; Permyjaya New Township; Lutong and Tudan; Senadin; Kuala Baram and Bario.

By registering with RC in these areas, he said members would able to lodge complaints and report to the committee’s WhatsApp group to help improve and better manage the council’s services to the local community.

Apart from members of the city council, he said the WhatsApp group comprised representatives from Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB), Laku and the police to monitor and act on complaints on electricity supply, water supply and security issues.

“The RC members can also lodge complaints about contractors that do not perform their duties such as cleaning drains, collecting garbage and cutting the grass.”
