KAPIT: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing hopes to see a Kampung Dayak established in this town.

This follows a proposal by the Kapit Resident’s Office to set up a Kampung Dayak on a 48-hectare piece of land which they have identified along Jalan Selirik.

Presently, there are several Dayak kampungs here which were built on the residents’ own initiatives known as ‘melatai and gentulong’ in Iban along Jalan Bukit Goram, Jalan Selirik and Jalan Melekun.

However, there was no proper planning for the building of the houses leading to congestion and overcrowding

Due to that, the villages do not have proper drainage system and road.

The proposed Kampung Dayak is suggested to have 258 dwelling houses complete with shop lots, cultural centre and sports facilities.

The estimated cost of earth work and provision of basic infrastructure is RM18 million.

Deputy Kapit Resident Galong Luang recently briefed Masing on the proposed Kampung Dayak to resettle the Ibans who migrated from rural longhouses to Kapit who are in dire need of proper houses.

The briefing was held at the Bletih State Complex in conjunction with the handing out of MRP grants to 58 recipients from Baleh and Kapit by Masing.

Masing said he would meet with Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat to discuss the proposal.

“Next, I will discuss with the proper authorities and then

Next, I will discuss with the proper authorities and then meet the Chief Minister for his kind consideration to set up the Kampung Dayak. Of course this is not for free. You have to buy at reasonable price. You have to apply just like those applying for resettlement scheme and will be given to those who are really in need of a house. “The resettlement is to be done properly and arranged by the authorities. We will involve the relevant government agencies,” Masing explained

Presently, Kapit has Kampung Baru Melayu, Kampung Muhibbah and Kampung Bletih Resettlement Scheme for the Muslim community, Kampung Bletih Cina to resettle the Chinese squatters from Lorong Satu Jalan Airport and the Jalan Puan Sri Tiong Resettlement Scheme which is a mixed resettlement mostly occupied by Ibans, Orang Ulus, Chinese, Bidayuhs and other races.

Present at the briefing were Nyabong, government officers and local community leaders.
