Ask yourself what you have done for Bintulu, Tiong chides DAP rep
SIBU: Tanjong Batu assemblyman Chiew Chiu Sing should ask himself if he has effectively served the community before questioning how Bintulu’s development should be handled.
Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the assemblyman should focus his efforts to developing the town rather than on whether local municipal councillors should be politically appointed or elected by the people.
“Commit yourself in your duty to the people of Bintulu first because that was what you were elected to do,” said Tiong – also Progressive Democratic Party president – through a press statement yesterday.
He added that Chiew had also been questioning whether the development should be carried out by a local council or Bintulu Development Authority.
“Chiew should not use this issue for political gain or to fish for votes. The people rely on their elected representatives to voice out and work for them.”
On the selection of municipal councillors, Tiong felt that appointments should be decided by the people.
He said this way, the people could determine for themselves if a councillor had performed his or her duty, and whether they had worked in accordance with the needs and wishes of the people.
“If they cannot perform such duties, what is the point of electing them?”
Tiong also claimed that when Pakatan Harapan was still the opposition at national level, DAP leader Lim Guan Eng had insisted that councillors must be elected.
“Now that they are the (federal) government, such a promise has not been fulfilled.”
