MIRI: The tender for the construction of the RM70-million Miri City Hall project is expected to be called by mid- January next year, says Miri mayor Adam Yii.

According to him, Miri City Council ( MCC) is now actively working on the necessary preparations for the project, which is expected to be completed within two years.

“The preliminary design for the project is already there and we have asked the consultant to work on the details. For the location, it has basically been confi rmed that the new City Hall would be next to Marina Central Park,” he told the media after chairing MPP’s full council meeting yesterday.

Yii said the project, funded by the Sarawak government, was a gift to the city in conjunction with the 13th anniversary celebration of Miri attaining city status.

“During the 13th Miri City Day anniversary celebration dinner in July this year, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said he would look for funds for MCC to pursue our dream for the city hall project.

“In response to the chief minister’s request, this project would be implemented within two years and be the venue for 15th Miri City anniversary celebration in 2020,” he added.

Yii pointed out that MCC has long wished for a new administrative centre which, once completed, would become another attractive icon for the city.

Earlier during the full council meeting, he tabled a proposal from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports to establish ‘ friendship city’ status between Miri and Nanning – the ‘green city’ capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China.

The proposal was endorsed during the meeting, after which Yii said the ministry would make the necessary arrangements regarding the matter.

Miri deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad and MCC secretary Morshidi Fredrick were among those present at the meeting.

The preliminary design for the project is already there and we have asked the consultant to work on the details. For the location, it has basically been confirmed that the new City Hall would be next to Marina Central Park. Adam Yii, Miri mayor
