Awg Tengah, China company discuss Samalaju project
BEIJING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on Thursday paid a courtesy call on Metallurgical Corporation of China ( MCC) president Zhang Mengxing at its headquarters here where the former was briefed on the latest development on the proposed Wenan steel project at Samalaju Industrial Park ( SIP) in Sarawak.
MCC is the shareholder and engineering procurement construction ( EPC) contractor for the project. It is one of the largest steel mill EPC contractors in the world, whereas Wenan is proposing a US$ 3 billion steel manufacturing plant in SIP, said a press release yesterday.
During the meeting, Awang Tengah emphasised the need for the project to be environmentalfriendly and adopt the latest technology.
He also urged the China company to give priority to local contractors and suppliers when it comes to procuring building materials and equipment.
“I also would like to give assurance on behalf of the Sarawak state government that we will facilitate the implementation of the project,” he added.
In response to Awang Tengah’s suggestions at the meeting, MCC on its part assured that the steel plant would be built using the latest environmental- friendly technology as well as giving priority to local contractors and suppliers.
Also present at the meeting were Wenan Steel Malaysia Sdn Bhd chairman Wang Wen An, Assistant Minister of Entreprenuer and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Malcolm Mussen Lamoh and permanent secretary to the Ministry of Industrial and Entreprenuer Development Datu Liaw Soon Eng.
