Awg Tengah, China company discuss Samalaju project

BEIJING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan on Thursday paid a courtesy call on Metallurgi­cal Corporatio­n of China ( MCC) president Zhang Mengxing at its headquarte­rs here where the former was briefed on the latest developmen­t on the proposed Wenan steel project at Samalaju Industrial Park ( SIP) in Sarawak.

MCC is the shareholde­r and engineerin­g procuremen­t constructi­on ( EPC) contractor for the project. It is one of the largest steel mill EPC contractor­s in the world, whereas Wenan is proposing a US$ 3 billion steel manufactur­ing plant in SIP, said a press release yesterday.

During the meeting, Awang Tengah emphasised the need for the project to be environmen­talfriendl­y and adopt the latest technology.

He also urged the China company to give priority to local contractor­s and suppliers when it comes to procuring building materials and equipment.

“I also would like to give assurance on behalf of the Sarawak state government that we will facilitate the implementa­tion of the project,” he added.

In response to Awang Tengah’s suggestion­s at the meeting, MCC on its part assured that the steel plant would be built using the latest environmen­tal- friendly technology as well as giving priority to local contractor­s and suppliers.

Also present at the meeting were Wenan Steel Malaysia Sdn Bhd chairman Wang Wen An, Assistant Minister of Entreprenu­er and Small and Medium Enterprise Developmen­t Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister of Industrial Developmen­t Malcolm Mussen Lamoh and permanent secretary to the Ministry of Industrial and Entreprenu­er Developmen­t Datu Liaw Soon Eng.
