73,000 voters above 90 still in EC’s voter registration list — Chairman

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 73,000 voters aged 90 and above including a 150-year- old are still on the Electoral Commission’s ( EC) voter registration list, EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said yesterday.

“Of this figure, we have learned that 11,000 actually voted (in 14th General Election) so they are still alive. For the balance (62,000), we will make sure it will be cleaned up,” he said when met by reporters at the ‘ Roundtable on Electoral Reform: The Way Forward for Free and Fair Elections in Parliament.

Azhar Azizan said the EC had yet to identify whether the remaining 62,000 senior citizens were alive or dead.

“The EC is in the process of cleaning the electoral roll to ensure the actual number of voters is accurate and it is a continuous process because every day, there are voters who die,” he said.

Asked whether the 150-year- old voter was alive, Azhar Azizan said he was still uncertain about the matter.

“If you think logically, you cannot be alive when you are 150...,” he said.

Azhar Azizan said he was also working with the police and the National Registration Department to create a system to automatically clean the electoral roll of deceased voters.

Commenting on the date for the Rantau state constituency byelection, Azhar Azizan said it would only be decided upon following the Federal Court’s decision over the appeal by incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

“They have six months to decide on the appeal, I think they will decide earlier... it’s often done much earlier,” he said.

On Nov 16, the Seremban Election Court declared Mohamad Hasan’s victory during GE14 as null and void.
