Labuan records highest amount of rainfall, Kuala Kangsar lowest

KUALA LUMPUR: Labuan recorded the highest total annual rainfall of 4,938.9 millimetre­s (mm) in 2017, while Kuala Kangsar recorded the lowest with 1,955.4mm, the Statistics Department of Malaysia revealed yesterday.

The department, through the 2018 Malaysian Environmen­tal Statistics Compendium presented environmen­tal statistics for the period between 2013 and 2017/2018 covering air, water, land, the population and the environmen­t, the impact of human activities on the environmen­t, as well as measures taken to reduce the impact.

“Malaysia is also experienci­ng a hot and humid climate with Jerantut, Temerloh and Kuala Kangsar recording the highest temperatur­e of 32.9 degrees Celcius, while the lowest temperatur­e of 16.1 degrees Celsius was recorded at Cameron Highlands,” the statement added.

According to the statement, emissions of air pollutants in 2017 were mostly due to motor vehicles (70.4 per cent), followed by power stations (24.5 per cent), industries ( 2.9 per cent) and others (2.1 per cent).

According to the 2016 Economic Census (reference year 2015), the statement said, a total of RM2.6 billion was spent on protecting the environmen­t, with the manufactur­ing sector being the largest contributo­r at 73.6 per cent.

The report also mentioned there were 498 cases of floods in 2017, with Selangor recording the highest number ( 86 cases) followed by Sarawak ( 64), and Pahang (61).

“Meanwhile, 83,443 cases of dengue fever recorded in 2017 without any deaths. However, there were 406 dengue haemorrhag­ic fever cases recorded with 177 deaths while 4,114 malaria cases were recorded with two deaths.

“Iron ore is the country’s highest land yield at 3.92 million tonnes in 2017. The import and export of the mineral also recorded the highest value, at RM3.27 billion and RM3.86 billion respective­ly,” the statement added. — Bernama
