BINTULU: Teachers, especially those teaching in rural schools, are the true heroes of the nation.

In this respect, the Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik hails them as ‘ unsung heroes’ and deserving of acknowledgment.

“I found out that many of our teachers – whether they are from Sarawak, Sabah or Peninsular Malaysia – have very high motivation and strong spirit in educating our children. We also need new teachers with this kind of motivation.

“For me, I call them ‘ heroes’ –

I found out that many of our teachers – whether they are from Sarawak, Sabah or Peninsular Malaysia – have very high motivation and strong spirit in educating our children. We also need new teachers with this kind of motivation.

some have stayed here for over 10 years and the one I met yesterday (Saturday) has been staying here for 28 years, living in the rural area in Sarawak,” the minister said during a press conference at Bintulu Education Office ( PPD) yesterday, in response to a question about his experience and the outcome of his visit to the rural schools here over the weekend.

However, Maszlee lamented that such great stories were never widely publicised or ‘sensationalised’ by the media.

“So I hope that the media could help us to share and spread the successful stories of our teachers – they deserved to be acknowledged.”

Meanwhile, Maszlee expressed his apologies to all staff members of Education Department and PPDs in Sarawak because of the workloads that they would need to carry out over the next five years.

“This is our national service – it’s fine. In (the next) five years we may get a little bit tired, but the impact can be felt by our children for the next 50 years; they will remember our sacrifices,” he said.

Deputy Sarawak education director Abang Mat Ali Abang Masagus and PPD Bintulu assistant officer Yusup Harbi were among those present at the press conference.
