-

KUCHING: Sibu has continued to produce talented athletes for the Sarawak State team and recently three athletes who excelled at the 2nd Wuwang Cup Invitational Wushu Championship were roped into the state elite training programme.

They are Shaun Kiu, Edison Wong Sing Yew and Edison Wong Sing Yen who are trained by Wong Hua Yiing.

She is the president and head coach of Kelab Permai Wushu Sibu.

The trio will undergo intensive training for the state’s challenge in Sukan Malaysia ( Sukma) in Johor in 2020 and future Sukma, national and international competitions.

They helped the 20- member Sibu team emerge the overall champions in the inter- division category of the Wuwang Cup with 32 gold, 20 silver and 12 bronze medals to finish ahead of Miri (1712- 6), Sarikei (15-2-1) and Kuching (4- 6- 5).

Wushu Federation of Sarawak ( WFS) has also commended Kelab Permai Wushu Sibu for grooming new talents at grassroots level and hoped that it can continue to contribute good calibre athletes to the state team.

Under Wong’s guidance and leadership, Kelab Permai Wushu Sibu has groomed numerous state and national athletes such as current national athlete Clement Ting Su Wei, state athletes Amelia Su, Chew Sow Hong and Muhammad Asri Abdul Wahab who have helped Sarawak win medals at previous Sukma competitions.

“I would like to express my heartiest gratitude to the team manager and the parents for their strong support.

“I also hope that more schools in Sibu will support wushu by letting their students train under us so that we can send more high calibre athletes to the Wuwang Cup and the Sarawak Wushu Championship next year,” she said.
