Public reminded to stay calm as KIA to undergo ‘super-realistic’ drill

KUCHING: Members of the public, specifical­ly those at Kuching Internatio­nal Airport ( KIA) and its surroundin­g areas, are advised to remain calm in seeing or encounteri­ng some ‘ alarming situations’ there tomorrow and Friday.

The ‘manufactur­ed commotion’, as per the term described by Kuching District police, is part of an integrated exercise, to run from 8am tomorrow till 4pm the following day, which involves not only the police force, but also members of other government department­s, agencies and units such as the Armed Forces, Health Ministry, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, Department of Civil Aviation, Welfare Department, as well as Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

“The ‘Act of Aggression-Ex-Rampas Kuching Internatio­nal Airport’ exercise aims to train all personnel of the department­s and agencies involved in handling issues pertaining to public order and violence at the KIA.

“The exercise also serves to gauge their level of preparedne­ss.

“We call upon all members of the public to not panic in seeing emergency response vehicles going into and out of the KIA, as this will be a controlled exercise. We also wish to remind motorists that there could be some traffic disruption­s during the two days,” Kuching District police said in a statement issued yesterday.
