SIBU: Cargo and container handling activities at the deepsea Tanjung Manis Port ( TMP) has seen strong growth since operations began in 2009.

Tanjung Manis Integrated Port Sdn Bhd ( TMP) chairman Datuk Sarudu Hoklai said in the port’s first year of operations, it only handled 4,845 twentyfoot equivalent units ( TEUs) of containers which jumped to 60,307 TEUs in 2017, while cargo grew from 94,000 tonnes to 3.94 million tonnes during the same period.

He said investments in aquaculture and agriculture in the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area are expected to see an increase in container cargo by 20,000 TEUs over the next three years.

“From 2009- 2018, we ( TMP) played an important role in equipping the Rajang Port Authority ( RPA) to handle cargo, with 262,456 TEUs over nine years, or 29,162 TEUs a year, passing through Rajang Port,” he said at TMP’s 10th anniversary celebration on Monday.

The celebration hosted Sarawak Urban Planing, Land Administration Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh, who represented Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Sarudu said continuous upgrade of the quality management system and provision of quality services to port users would still be TMP’s main focus periodically.

“TMP has also provided an online integrated port management system that meets international standards to benefit the shipping community as the system allows them to conduct business 24/7,” he added. — Bernama
