-

MIRI: The Sarawak Kayan Association ( PKS) Nahah AA branch will host its annual preChristmas gathering at Dynasty Hotel here tomorrow ( Dec 6).

According to PKS Nahah AA chairman Laing Uvang, who is also the organising committee head, the dinner event is part of the association’s initiatives towards fostering closer relationship not only between members, but also between them and the community in general, as well as strengthening the prevailing unity and solidarity among the Kayans in Sarawak.

This year’s pre- Christmas gathering is expected to host more than 250 guests, who will be treated to an array of activities meant to enliven the evening, said Laing.

“Christmas is just around the corner and this gathering aims to celebrate the festive season before our members head back to their respective longhouses or other destinations, and spend the holidays with their families.

“It is also hoped that through this dinner, we will be able to raise the much-needed funds to enable the branch finance its activities for many years to come,” Laing said after paying a courtesy call on Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau at the latter’s office here yesterday.

Additionally, Laing said the event would also hand out awards to Kayan schoolchildren who attained outstanding results in Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR), Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

“The response to the dinner has been overwhelming, with all available tables having been taken up.

“This goes to show that the comradeship among the Kayans and members of PKS Nahah AA is very strong.”

Meanwhile in his remarks, Dennis commended the PKS branch for its tireless efforts in uniting the Kayans.

“Our community comprises only around 80,000 people within the larger Orang Ulu group, which is estimated to consist of around 300,000 people in Malaysia. As such, we must uphold this unity and seek ways to progress together,” said the assemblyman, who is also Sarawak Kayan Association president.

PKS Nahah AA is one of six active branches of the parent association, with over 200 registered members.
