Delivery man charged with impersonating police officer, cheating senior citizen

TAIPING: A delivery man was charged in a magistrate’s court here yesterday for allegedly impersonating police officer and cheating a senior citizen two years ago.

The accused, V Premantharan Pillai, 40, from Pandamaran, Klang, Selangor, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by the interpreter before Magistrate Mohd Hairol Jemain.

Premantharan was alleged to have cheated R Asubadi @ Asupathy, 76, by impersonating a policeman and told the victim to pay him RM2,500 to settle his grandchild’s arrest case, which prompted the victim to bank in the money into a CIMB Bank account.

The accused was charged with committing the offence at the CIMB Bank Taiping, at about 7.41pm, Jan 13, 2016 and the case was investigated under Section 419 of the Penal Code which provides maximum jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

The court then set Jan 4 for mention and allowed a RM6,500 bail in one surety as well as ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until the disposal of his case.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Raihan Rithwan prosecuted while the accused was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation counsel T Selvadoray.

On May 9, 2016, Premantharan was charged with 12 counts of cheating other victims at the magistrate’s court in Jitra, Kedah, involving RM50,000 in losses. — Bernama
