Address safety weaknesses, incorporate into SOP — PAMSC

-

KUCHING: Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia Sarawak Chapter ( PAMSC) has added its voice to call for the explosion at CityONE Megamall on Tuesday to be thoroughly investigated in order to determine the cause of the incident.

In a statement yesterday, the institute says any weaknesses in safety must be addressed and incorporated into the standard operating procedures of the mall’s renovation works in future in order to protect the safety of tenants and the public.

“Although we do not know the full facts of the incident, the authorities have given early indications that the incident was most likely caused by a gas explosion.

“Gas explosions are rare occurrences because in properly designed and constructed buildings, strict protocols and features are implemented in order to protect the safety of the workers, end users as well as the general public,” said the statement.

PAMSC also recommended that major renovation works, such as testing and commissioning of equipments in shopping malls and buildings of a similar nature, should only be done outside the operating and opening hours in order to protect and safeguard the public from potential accidents.

It said due to the recent increase in high- density residential and commercial developments in Kuching, PAMSC is currently working with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) and other stakeholders in reviewing the Sarawak Building Ordinance ( SBO) to ensure the state’s building bylaws are relevant and adhere to high standards of safety and health issues.

“We hope that it (review of SBO) will be tabled in the DUN ( State Legislative Assembly) sitting soon.”

PAMSC also hopes that building owners and their management will work hand in hand with the authorities concerned to ensure that the by-laws are upheld, and ensure that buildings comply with high standards of health and safety across the state.

“We would also like to express our deepest sympathies to the victims of the recent incident at CityONE Megamall and their families. For those who were injured, we wish them a full and speedy recovery.”
