DBKU to introduce 4Rs, biodegradable bags next year

-

KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission ( DBKU) aspires to spearhead environmental preservation in the city by introducing 4Rs, adding ‘Recover’ to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

According to Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, this 4R initiative will be among the highlights of Agenda DBKU 2019, expected to be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Definitely, we are spearheading efforts to be environmentally friendly and will introduce another R, Recover, to the current 3R.

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. What we have in mind is used computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, batteries and such, to recover elements of gold, silver and others,” he said in reply to a question on following in the footsteps of Council of Kuching City South ( MBKS) ‘ No Plastic Bags On Weekends Campaign’.

Wahap said DBKU launched ‘No Plastic Bags on Weekends’ during Majlis Agenda DBKU in 2016.

“We also encouraged shoppers to bring along special reusable and easily foldable shopping bags introduced then, through Borneo Talk,” he pointed out.

He conceded that the campaign did not have a very favourable outcome then.

“The people in Kuching had yet to catch on the move. Next year, DBKU will introduce biodegradable bags for all shoppers.

“These shopping bags are more environmentally friendly and will be one of the highlights in Agenda DBKU 2019,” added Wahap.

Last week, MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan said his council did not receive any complaint from the community since the implementation of ‘ No Plastic Bags On Weekends Campaign’ on Dec 1.

He said the campaign initiated by MBKS strives for a plastic-free society in the near future and serves as a reminder that there are alternatives to environmentally harmful plastic bags.
