Author to give talk on OMO, MA63 in Miri

-

KUCHING: The author of ‘Sarawak – The Real Deal’ and ‘Sarawak Chronicle’, Lina Soo will be in Miri to give a public talk on Sarawak Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) and Malaysia Agreement (MA63).

The programme is run in connection with the 108th anniversary of the Grand Old Lady in Miri, this Dec 22.

According to Soo, who is State Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) president, the talk will commence at 2pm this Saturday ( Dec 22) at Dynasty Hotel Miri. Admission to the session is free. “The Grand Old Lady is the first oil well in Sarawak, Borneo, which started guzzling out the ‘black gold’ on Dec 22, 1910, on Canada Hill – also known as Bukit Telaga Minyak.

“This famous landmark, which is 30m high, had elevated a small fishing village in northern Sarawak to an ‘oil town’ – standing proud and tall until its ‘retirement’ in 1972,” she said, adding that the Grand Old Lady is revered today as a monument that commemorates the history of Sarawak’s oil industry and also a major draw for tourists to come to Miri.

Besides her books on Sarawak history based on declassified British documents, Soo will also be releasing reprints of The National Geographic Magazine’s article entitled ‘Sarawak: The Land of the White Rajahs’, which was published in 1919.

Written by Harrison W Smith, the 100-year old historic write-up recounts the social life and culture of the Sarawak Dayaks, with 60 black-and-white illustrations.

The reprint booklet will be available for purchase at RM20 per copy, during the talk.

For further details, Soo can be contacted at 014-5950 511.
