KUCHING: The spirit of celebrating Christmas remains strong in Sarawak as seen by the high volume of sales of most decorative items.

For one of the many shops selling Christmas decorative items, Katai Import and Export Sdn Bhd ( Katai), most of their decorative items for Christmas this year have been sold.

According to Katai’s Jasmine Bong, Christmas is never a dull occasion in Kuching and the shop is always anticipating festive celebrations like Christmas every year.

“Christmas is definitely one of the main occasions celebrated by Sarawakians. For us, we know it judging from the sales of our items during the time around Christmas,” she said when met yesterday.

A look at hypermarkets around Kuching City and Kota Samarahan area also revealed the same scenario.

Shoppers could be seen lining up at payment counters with many Christmas items in their trolleys.

As of 2pm at Kota Samarahan, the area around Farley Supermarket was congested with cars as shoppers flocked to the supermarket to do last-minute shopping.

The same atmosphere could also be felt at King Centre in Simpang Tiga, especially in the morning.

Christmas has always been a grand celebration in Sarawak.

In Sarawak, Christmas is traditionally celebrated by going to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, and holding open house for friends and relatives of all religious and racial backgrounds.
