‘Seven fatal accidents from Dec 18 to 28 this year’

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded seven fatal accidents from Dec 18 to 25, an increase of four fatalities compared to the same period last year.

State Traffic Investigat­ion and Enforcemen­t Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, who revealed this yesterday, said the state also saw an increase in the number of road accidents over the same period compared to that of last year.

From Dec 18 to 25 this year, Sarawak recorded 366 road accidents, an increase of 12 cases compared to the same period last year, he said in a statement.

However, there were no severe accident cases between Dec 18 and 25 this year but there were four such cases during the same period last year, he disclosed.

He said a total of 4,328 traffic summonses were issued during the mentioned week this year while the department issued 4,925 summonses over the same period last year.

According to Alexson, a total of 625 vehicles were involved in road accidents during the mentioned period this year against 606 cases last year.

“The ‘Ops Selamat’ campaign was launched in Sibu on Dec 18 in conjunctio­n with this year’s Christmas celebratio­n and it will be continued until New Year’s Day which is Jan 1 next year,” he added.
