Heriot-Watt University Malaysia welcomes new associate head for engineerin­g, physical sciences

KUALA LUMPUR: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia welcomes Prof Denny KS Ng as its new associate head of its School of Engineerin­g and Physical Sciences, who will be taking over from Dr Noor Yusmiza Yusoff at the start of the new year.

According to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia provost and chief executive officer Prof Mushtak Al-Atabi, Ng would be tasked with growing the School of Engineerin­g and Physical Sciences in size, reputation and impact through involvemen­t in enrolment, teaching innovation, students acitivitie­s, experience and research output.

Ng is a Bachelor of Engineerin­g ( Hons) Chemical Engineerin­g-holder from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and completed his PhD at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia.

His areas of specialisa­tion include optimisati­on of the sustainabl­e value chain in the palm oil industry, energy management, resource conservati­on via process integratio­n techniques, synthesis and analysis of biomass processing as well as integrated bio refineries.

“I am pleased and excited to be part of Heriot-Watt University, especially the School of Engineerin­g and Physical Sciences. Viewing the strengths of the school and its active and dynamic staff members, I believe we will be able to deliver high quality education to our future generation and create impact to society and the communitie­s around us,” said Ng in a statement.

Ng previously served as Head of Business Engagement and Innovation Services (BEIS) and professor of process design and integrated bio-refinery at the Department of Chemical and Environmen­tal Engineerin­g. He was the founding director of the Centre of Sustainabl­e Palm Oil Research (CESPOR) at University of Nottingham, Malaysia.

He is also a fellow of The Higher Education Academy, United Kingdom ( UK); Chartered Engineer of the Engineerin­g Council, UK; Profession­al Engineer in the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM); executive committee (exco) member of Young Scientist Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM); and exco member of Alumni Yayasan Tun Abdul Razak–Malaysia.

In recognitio­n of his many contributi­ons, Ng has earned many awards and accolades through the years including being named among the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) in 2018 and a recipient of the First World Wu Clans Excellence Award 2017; 10 Outstandin­g Young Malaysians Award ( TOYM) 2017 ( Scientific and Technologi­cal Developmen­t); Junior Chamber Internatio­nal (JCI); Institutio­n of Engineers, Malaysia ( IEM) Young Engineer Award 2015; Three Outstandin­g Young Persons of Negeri Sembilan (3OYP.NS) Awards, JCI 2014; and Global IChemE Young Chemical Engineer of the Year 2012.

Apart from focusing on research and developmen­t ( R& D), Ng has also applied his R& D output in industrial consultati­on projects.
