MGA commends progressive gas market liberalisation
KUCHING: The Malaysian Gas Association ( MGA) has commended the government’s decision to maintain the course on gas market liberalisation which will ultimately ensure wider options for Malaysia’s gas consumers.
The ongoing gas market liberalisation and continued alignment of domestic gas prices with the international markets will create a competitive and dynamic environment, promoting efficient allocation and utilisation of resources to ensure Malaysia’s long-term energy security.
The government recently announced a revision to the natural gas tariff for the non-power sector in Peninsular Malaysia, for the period starting January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2019.
“As the lead advocate for the nation’s natural g asas industry, MGA supports the government’s long-term vision to create a level playing field, increase participation and pave the way for stronger socio-economic progress in the country. “MGA is committed to work together with policy makers and industry players to further develop a vibrant gas market. “Natural gas offers integrated innovative gas solutions for the country’s long-term energy mix at significantly lower economic and environmental cost. As such, MGA firmly advocates expanding the use of natural gas for fueling a sustainable future,” MGA’s secretary general Rosman Hamzah said. The revision, as approved by the Energy Commission, was announced by Gas Malaysia Bhd on Wednesday, with the average natural gas base tariff for the non-power sector in Peninsular Malaysia set at RM32. 69RM per MMBtu for the period beginning January 1 to June 30, 2019, withw a RM 0.23 per MBtu Gas Cost Pass Through (GCPT) surcharge resulting in an average effective tariff of RM 32.92 per MBtu. In line with the government’s initiativein to liberalise the Malaysian gas sector, MGA will continuec to enhance awareness on the benefits ofo natural gas, increase acceptance on Malays Mali a’ s gas market reform and facilitate growth of the natural gas industry.
