SRI AMAN: A man was killed, while two others were injured after their truck plunged into a ravine at KM44 of Jalan Sri Aman-Serian near here yesterday.

Mohamad Firdaus Jamuri, 27, was among two truck attendants travelling on board the heavy vehicle together with the driver, and it is said that they were heading to town.

It is believed that the driver was manoeuvring the truck along the steeply-inclined road while driving past Bukit Begunan, when he lost control of the vehicle – causing it to plunge into the 5m-deep ravine.

It was also said that the impact from the crash caused all three men to be flung out of the vehicle.

The paramedics, who rushed to the scene following a distress call received at 12.40am, pronounced Firdaus dead on site.

The driver and the other truck attendant – aged 33 and 25, respectively – were badly hurt. They were later sent to Sri Aman Hospital for treatment.

Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, when contacted, confirmed the case, adding that the body had been handed over to the police for further action.

The incident also led to another crash, involving an express bus, he said.

“As rescue works were being carried out by the firefighters, the driver of an express bus travelling from Kuching and heading to Sri Aman, lost control of the vehicle upon reaching the site of the earlier accident.

“The bus, with 39 passengers on board, veered off the road and landed in a ditch,” he said, adding that there were no serious injuries in the second incident.
