MIRI: Miri MP Dr Teo Yu Keng yesterday handed over back-to-school items like school bags, stationeries and shoes to representatives of 17 primary schools from in and around the city ahead of the start of the new school year this Wednesday (Jan 2).

The recipient schools were SJKC Chung San Miri, SK Pujut Corner, SK Riam Batu 2, SJKC Chung Hua Bakam, SK Temenggong Muip, SK Kampung Luak, SK Sg. Buri, SJKC Chung Hua Lumut, SJKC Chung Hua Sibuti, SJKC Hwa Kwong, SJKC Chee Meng, SJKC Chung Hua Marudi, SJKC Hua Nam, SK Sungai Kelabit, SK Sg Liam, SK Kuala Baram and SJKC Chung Hua Miri.

The contribution handover ceremony was held at SK Kampung Luak and the assistance will benefit more than 1,000 students from the 17 schools.

“Helping the less fortunate students whose families are from the low income group could help ease the burden of parents in buying the necessities for the new school year.

“This assistance is also the federal government’s objective to reach out to those in need. Of course, apart from this, we are looking into other ways that could help them. Discussions on how we could help them next year are already in progress and we will see how they go,” Dr Teo told reporters at the function.

Yesterday marked the second day of the school aid distribution with the first one carried out on Friday which benefited more than 1, 000 students from 11 primary schools.

“We give priority to students from low income families. It is very important that the children go to school with at least having basic necessities like shoes, bag and stationeries. Perhaps, if situation permits, we might make arrangement for cash assistance next year.”

Also present were Miri Division Headmasters’ Council chairperson Choo Chong Lok who is also SJKC Chung San Miri headmaster and SK Kampung Luak headmaster Raja Badrul Hisham Raja Abd Jalil.
