MIRI: As we bid farewell to 2018, most people are looking forward to 2019 brimming with the hope to practise a healthy lifestyle and to keep fit, but eventually abandoning it way too soon.

According to World Health Organisation ( WHO), Malaysia is Asia’s fattest country with approximately half of the population overweight or obese.

The problem of obesity and non- communicable diseases in the country is rising and at an alarming level and Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has also said that the Ministry’s National Health and Morbidity survey found that one out of every two Malaysians had overweight and obesity problems.

Fitness instructor Arimah Basari said each individual must learn to love themselves fi rst and be healthy for their own future and their loved ones.

activities and there will be issues like foot and knee pain due to the pressure of the body weight and there are also potentials of getting other diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or heart problem.

“If we are not healthy it will interrupt life’s daily routine and at the same time it will affect our loved ones. This is all in the mind. Set an objective and find the right ways to lose weight healthily. One needs to be positive and must have a high determination and discipline for this,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Arimah advises beginners to undergo fitness training in groups and look for the best group exercise programme with the same target and mission.

“Exercising in group is important as this will overcome despair, boredom and as a strong supporter with each other compared to exercising alone.

“To be healthy is not a matter of age. Diseases do not recognise age. Most of the health problems come from the food we eat and it is clear to us that the younger generation are exposed to processed food which leads to obesity at a very young age,” said Arimah, who started TFC FIT or also known as Geng Tayar No 1 Miri, an outdoor fitness programme with her husband coach Adanan Idi or coach Nan in 2015 to create health awareness among Mirians.

With more than 500 people who have benefitted from the programme since its inception including the police force, she also reminded everyone that 80 per cent of the weight loss process comes from what we eat and only 20 per cent is through exercise.

“At TFC FIT we practise weight loss concepts through nutrition monitoring or discipline. There is no short cut through slimming pills and so on. The goal will not be achieved if the food intake is not taken seriously. Age is not a barrier to start being fit as the youngest we had in our programme is 12 years old and the oldest 67 years old.

“We will monitor our members’ daily diet by emphasising the intake of protein, fibre and carbohydrates through natural ingredients and at the same time, our members can still enjoy the desired menu but only at a certain time,” she said.

Arimah added that time should not be in between those who want to keep fit or reduce their weight.

“Don’t wait for time, but we have to look for time to be healthy and to love our own self. Even for our programme, we will start our session at 5.15pm to give time for our working members to attend the programme. Career and being healthy must go hand in hand,” she said.

Commenting on the smoking ban at public eateries, Arimah said the ban will benefit the surrounding people because everyone is aware of the risk where passive smoking is just as deadly as first-hand smoke.
