MCC awaits directive from ministry on smoking ban issue

-

MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) is awaiting directive from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to enforce Sarawak’s own policy on smoking ban at eateries.

Mayor Adam Yii said like the other councils in the state, MCC will follow the Sarawak government’s instruction on the policy.

“The local councils here come under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

“Therefore, there is a need for us to follow the Sarawak government’s directive,” he said when asked on the enforcement of smoking ban during MCC’s meetthepeople session at the Urban Transformation Centre ( UTC) Miri yesterday.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has said that the smoking ban has yet to be enforced in Sarawak unlike in Peninsular Malaysia which took effect on Jan 1 this year.

On the session, Yii said the council received six reports or complaints from the public with most of them filed under engineering section.

Two requests on maintenance of roads for RPR Permyjaya Newtownship and Kampung Pujut Tanjong Batu as well as on illegal extension at Luak Bay area were received.

Two cases recorded under public cleanliness and maintenance department comprised garbage col lection at Desa Senadin and illegal dumping in Jalan Persekutuan.

Under public health department, MCC only received one complaint on environment issue at RPR Permyjaya New Township.

Also present was deputy mayor councillor Julaihi Mohamad.
