Two remanded in robbery-rape case

MIRI: A magistrate’s court here yesterday remanded two men to facilitate the investigat­ion of the robbery and rape of a store assistant.

Magistrate Kasyfurrah­man Abang Ahmad remanded the first suspect, aged 27, for one day, while the 36-year-old second suspect was remanded for five days.

He issued the order after allowing the remand applicatio­n by investigat­ing officer Insp Mohammad Nashriq Noring from the Miri Central police station.

In his applicatio­n, Mohammad Nashriq said on Dec 22, a woman filed a police report claiming she was robbed and raped by an unknown man.

The 24-year- old complainan­t said that around 3am that same day, she was sleeping in her rented room at Jalan Airport when a man suddenly broke in by forcing open the door.

She said the man took her belongings and then raped her.

During the rape, she said the man placed a knife on her neck and threatened to kill her if she screamed.

Acting on informatio­n received, around 6.30pm on Wednesday (Jan 2), a team of police conducting `Ops Rentap’ arrested a man at Lorong 7 Desa Indah, Bandar Baru Permyjaya on suspicion of his involvemen­t in the case.

During the arrest, the police also confiscate­d a mobile phone as a case exhibit.

Around 12.45am on Thursday (Jan 3), the police arrested a second suspect at Lorong 4 Quadruplex, Bandar Baru Permyjaya.

In his applicatio­n, Nashriq said that a seven- day remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was needed on both suspects to enable the police to complete their investigat­ion.
