STU supports call for diesel to be sent to 21 mission schools

-

SIBU: Sarawak Teachers Union ( STU) supports the Sarawak government’s call upon the Education Department to write to the Ministry of Education ( MoE) requesting for continued supply of diesel to 21 mission schools in the rural areas.

According to STU president Macky Joseph, sufficient supply of fuel is needed to ensure that classes in these schools would not be interrupted.

“STU is always against the use of generators because they are very troublesome, especially when it comes to maintenance and the supply of diesel.”

It is reported that 21 mission schools in the rural areas would need diesel from April to December this year to power their generator sets.

The federal government is currently providing them with the supply up to March.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who was briefed on the diesel issue during a meeting with officials from the Education Department in Kuching on Thursday, said the Sarawak Education Department would write to the MoE to request for the supply to be continued until end of the year.

Should there be no response from the MoE by March, then the Sarawak government would have to step in.

“We cannot allow the students and teachers to suffer and for classes to be interrupted.

“We will have to fi nd a solution to help the schools before end of March,” Uggah was quoted as having said then.
