Resort city readies for bigger, better 17th CNY Bazaar

-

MIRI: The 17th Chinese New Year ( CNY) Bazaar from Jan 29 to Feb 4 is expected to be bigger and better with 300 stalls from High Street to Miri Times Square, a new commercial centre here.

When contacted yesterday, a spokesperson of Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s ( MCCCI) office revealed that a wide range of festive food, beverages, ornaments and plants will be available at the annual bazaar.

“Compared to previous years, there are more than 260 traders who permanently rent stalls at the bazaar, including Bumiputra and Chinese traders with additional 40 stalls to be set up at Miri Times Square, bringing the total number to 300 stalls,” said the spokesperson.

Currently, 80 per cent of the stalls have been taken up, with some traders coming from Kuching, Sibu and Sabah. Those interested in renting stalls are advised to contact MCCCI.

Decoration along the bazaar has been in progress since the end of December and is expected to be completed in the next two weeks.

“We are delighted that Marina Parkcity is sponsoring plum flowers and trees as decoration for Miri Times Square. It will add a touch of freshness to the popular annual event in Miri,” added the spokesperson.

It was also mentioned that Malay, Dayak performances will be added to Chinese stage performances during the bazaar.

On a ground check at Miri Times Square, the contractor for the decoration revealed that 600 to 700 mini red lanterns will be put up to create Chinese new year ambiance on a grand scale.

Regarding the issue of security and theft, additional enforcement personnel will patrol the area, whilst traders are reminded to look after their own belongings.

“In the past two years, theft was quite a problem. We are looking at alternatives to reduce and possibly resolve it for good,” said MCCCI’s secretary office.
